Abstract

This report is written prior to the completion of author’s final year project entitled
“Decomposition of Oil Palm Wastes using Hot Decompressed Water”. There are
several processes exists in order to convert biomass into fuel and feedstocks
nowadays, however, there still no research being done on the title of this research.
Hence, this project was being commenced to see for potential ways to convert biomass
which oil palm wastes were used to assist the project. This research is being done with
several objectives which are to investigate the occurrance of the decomposition of oil
palm wastes in hot compressed water between 200 to 250oC. However, there are a few
specific objectives that have been identified and are related to the commencement of
this project which are to study the decomposition behavior of oil palm wastes, to
investigate the effects of temperature, retention time and amount of catalyst used on
the decomposition of oil palm wastes, and lastly, to determine characteristics of liquid
yield as the potential future liquid fuel. The results on each testing to address the
objectives are available in this report with detailed discussion on each of them.
