Abstract

This project focuses on the improvement of the lighting design technique used for an indoor lighting in a process plant area by combining existing lighting simulator and a Life Cycle Cost (LCC) analysis. The purpose of carrying out this project is to calculate the average illumination level in 2D plan layout and reducing the number of lighting sources used by optimizing their placement in an indoor environment. Other than that, this project also provides LCC analysis to help in determining the overall cost of the lighting sources during their life span. Illumination level can be easily described as a measure of how much light is falling and spread on a targeted plane or a surface area. The inverse square law states that the illumination level is inversely proportional to the distance between lighting source and the illuminated surface area [1]. Workplace area such as plant process needs a good illumination level. Poor illumination level can affect the health of the worker causing symptoms like migraine and headache. Other than that, poor illumination also will cause lack of concentration which can lead to injury and accident [2].Standard and guideline provided by a certain organization such as (Illuminating Engineering Society of North America) IESNA can be used to determine whether the illumination level provided by the lighting system is sufficient or not. Some companies have their own standard that is compulsory to be followed, for example, PETRONAS Technical Standard (PTS).
