Abstract
The exploration for alternative energy had been developed by scientist and researcher to counter the increasing energy demands worldwide. This alternative energy sources are mostly of renewable energy which is harvested from solar, geothermal, wind, wave and tidal. In this research, wave energy technology will be the main focused since this energy is infinite and easily located around the globe. Scientist had developed many types of wave energy converter which are huge, heavy and only suitable for large application. Therefore, this project will be focusing on the designing and modelling of a portable pico generator that can be used in small scale application such as for lighting or outdoor activities which is approximately 100W. The type of generator, power take off method, stator and rotor configuration of the portable pico generator have been identified and analyzed through the literature review. Based on this characteristic, eight designs with different shapes of magnet are proposed in order to select the best design for the generator. Preliminary results is obtained through simulation and analysis at air gap distribution and open circuit test using ANSYS Maxwell software based on the specifications for all the design. Optimization on the dimension of the proposed designs have been conducted by varying the parameter of the length of stator to rotor ratio, pitch ratio and split ratio for each design. Lastly, the selection of the best design for the generator are determined through the efficiency calculation based on the core and copper loss that occur in the proposed design.
