Abstract

An Internet of Things (IoT) based monitoring system using Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) Technology powered by energy harvesters is a simple and efficient way to monitor the water quality in rivers. This application provides real time monitoring through the interchange of data between sensor nodes and the base station. The processed data is later sent to the cloud server for the users of the system to access and control. The main challenges that can be overcome by this system are the reduction of manual work by humans in gathering data and monitoring the conditions of rivers. The advantages of this system are low power consumption, high energy sustainability and zero carbon emission. In this IoT system, through a long range and low power WSN, data is gathered using sensor and sink nodes consisting of turbidity sensor, pH sensor, temperature sensor with a combination of Arduino Mega microcontroller and LoRa shield. Data received is uploaded to a cloud server through WiFi shield with an internet connectivity. The project aims to provide sustainability in energy to the IoT monitoring system. The sensor node is powered by an energy harvesting circuit consisting of photovoltaic cells, a bq25505 energy module, LTC3525 circuit and batteries. The output of the solar cells which are connected to an energy management module which has dc-dc boost converter circuit with battery management to increase the voltage to a higher level before storing into the battery. Putting all together, this research demonstrates a system in which can operate with sustainable renewable energy, without human intervention and is environmentally friendly.
