Abstract

The energy meter is created with the purpose to do measurement on the electricity consumption of every residential unit in which allow the service provider to charge the user accordingly per monthly usage basis. However, the current energy meter is lack of functionality in wireless communication, detailed data storage and real-time monitoring which remained unchanged for the past few decades. The research proposed development of an energy consumption monitoring device that can be used together with existing energy meter application utilizing the internet of things (IoT) technology to add the functionality such as real-time energy monitoring, energy usage data collection and personalize user energy load forecasting. The IoT energy meter proposed is developed based on the result of study of the available electrical sensors, controller boards as well as ensuring the communication network used allow the prototype to act as an IoT device as well as the development of Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network modelling for the system data analytics. A comparative analysis is done with the existing forecasting techniques confirms that the developed LSTM model shown a superior load forecasting performance. Given the excellent performance of the proposed LSTM model, it has the limitation of memory-bandwidth constraints which will affect the system performance. The outcomes of the integration of the energy consumption monitoring device with the existing energy meter application shown that the energy meter application able to perform the data acquisition, data storage, data processing and data analytics using the IoT technology.
