AIR GASIFICATION OF REFINERY SLUDGE IN AN UPDRAfT FIXED BED
REACTOR.
PhD thesis, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS.
Abstract
The disposal of waste materials (refinery sludge) of about 40 tonnes per month with
high content of hydrocarbons and heavy metals from a local refinery can cause
serious environmental problems if not properly done. Most of this refinery sludge is
disposed at Kualiti Alam by incineration or in some case by landfill which is an
economical and uncomplicated technique. Disposal of this carbon rich waste by the
above two methods is wasteful in terms of energy conversion. Therefore an
alternative method was found to use the sludge as an energy source via gasification
for syngas production and power generation.
