Abstract

Different additives are added in the drilling mud to increase its efficiency in terms of its rheology and filtration properties. Recently, the application of ionic liquids (ILs) has been exploited by various investigators as drilling additives for improving the mud rheology. However, Ionic liquids are generally expensive, toxic and non-biodegradable. Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES) are the cheaper alternative of ionic liquids possessing the same qualities as of ILs. In this research, two DES have been selected based upon their good thermal stability and hydrogen-bond formation capability. The in-house prepared; Choline chloride:Urea (CC:Urea) and Potassium Carbonate:Glycerol (PC:Gly) based DES have been used as drilling fluid additives in water-based mud. Drilling fluid rheology and properties have been determined by following AP1 13B/1 standards. The results evidenced that the addition of DES improved the overall mud rheology. PC based DES resulted into 24% and 36% while CC based DES resulted into 20% and 14.5% reduction in filtrate volume and mud cake thickness respectively. However, CC:Urea based mud showed overall better performance even at high temperature. Moreover, centered on the outcomes of Zeta potential, XRD and FTIR, it is proposed that the improvement in mud rheology and filtration is due to the shift in clay’s size and structure on interaction with DES. Besides, DES based mud followed Herschel-Buckley model and showed excellent shear thinning behaviour even at elevated temperature. Lastly, the performance of both DES was compared with three selected ionic liquids (EMIMCl, BMIMCl, BMIMBF4 ) at optimum concentration i.e., 0.5%. The result indicated that both DES performed better as compared to three ionic liquids in terms of rheological and filtration behaviour. Among three ionic liquids BMIM-BF4 showed the best performance which could be attributed to its longer alkyl chain and high hydrophobicity which makes intercalation and interaction with clay easier. Thus, CC:Urea DES is recommended as a cheaper and non-toxic alternative of ILs for improving rheological and filtration properties of drilling mud.
