Abstract

Most abandoned mining ponds are suitable as retention or detention ponds. The pond
chosen in this study satisfies the characteristics to be used as retention or detention pond.
Shown by it locality, capacity, inlet and outlet facilities for the catchments considered in
the study. The design rainfall was obtained from MASMA manual IDF curves using
Bagan Scrai town design storm coefficients. Time-series rainfall data which was
obtained from Jabatan Pengairan dan Saliran (JPS) is analyze to obtained new rainfall
intensity. The design discharges for inflow and outflow from the pond was obtained by
using manual and computer modeling methods. The result shows that the design rainfall
intensity is more conservative than that observed data. The result from the two methods
used for design discharge was compared and analyze. It was found that the abandoned
mining pond volume is adequate to cater stormwater management. The volume of
retention pond given by MIDUSS modeling is higher compare to the manual calculation.
Abandoned mining pond has yet to be looked at positively, with proper planning and
political will it has the potential to be developed into prime real estate in the future.
