Abstract

This document is to report the final year project entitled “Design liquid-liquid extraction for sulphur species removal from crude oil using ionic liquid”. As already known, the new green desulphurization technology which is ionic liquid emerged to be a good study to be conduct. Sulphur present in fuel can pollutes the atmosphere in the form of SOx. The theory of designing the equipment is by contacting one ionic liquid with model oil carrying sulphur species. By contacting these liquid, sulphur species as solute in the carrier is expected to be extracted by the solvent, ionic liquid. The study on selectivity and capacity must be conducted in order to select a proper type of ionic liquid for industrial application. Somehow, in recent study there is no specific method on the equipment design for sulphur species removal using ionic liquid. Methodology for liquid-liquid extractor design is planned to be prepared. Using graphical method analogous to McCabe Thiele method which applied in similarly in distillation column design, graphical stages are being drawn using the data from the analytical simulation software, COSMO. Ternary phase diagram is plotted and stage by stage calculation been conduct. Another analytical method using Kremser Equation also been studied. Ionic liquid used in the study are 1-n-Butyl-3- methylimidazolium octasulphate [bmim OcSO4], 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium diethylphosphate [emim DEtPO4] and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethylsulfate [emim EtSO4]. The sulphur species is dibenzothiophene (DBT) and 4-methyl-dibenzothiophene (4-MDBT) at 25oC and 40oC. Model oil used is dodecane.
