Abstract

The aim of this project is to design an evaporative solar cooler system that is powered by solar electricity for domestic sector. Since Malaysia is located near to the equator, the country receive large and constant amount of solar energy during daytime. It would be a waste if this energy is not utilized for cooling purposes because during daytime air conditioners are normally used which lead to high electricity consumption. The development of solar evaporative cooler system is one of the solutions for thermal comfort that require low power. A two-stage evaporative solar cooler system is designed, where the warm air is cooled in this evaporative cooler, producing cool air with low humidity. The evaporative cooler uses electricity generated by photovoltaic system. The components used are solar panel, battery, charge controller, aluminium cross-flow plat-type heat exchanger, water pump and fan blower. The evaporative solar cooler system has many advantages compared to conventional air conditioning system in terms of cost, environmental effect and usage of electricity. The fabrication and testing of the solar evaporative cooler prototype have been successfully done and this will be able to bring huge benefits for the future.
