Abstract

Pump is an important device widely used in many areas and applications. Pump is
used not only to transfer liquid but also mixture of solid and liquid such as slurry. The
objective of this project is to design and develop a Multidisc Pump used to transfer mixed
fluid or slurry with higher volumetric flow rate and also to determine the efficiency of the
pump. The problem generally occurs when pumping slurry is cavitation and wear of the
impeller because of entrainment of many solid and low flowrate. A study on previous
designed centrifugal and disc pump for slurry application is included in this project.
Volumetric flow rate and head are important parameters considered in the design stage
while the discharge velocity, power and efficiency for this pump are calculated besides of
impeller sizing. The meshing and simulation of the various Multidisc Pump designs are
performed. As a result from the simulation, discharge velocity, volumetric flow rate,
power output and efficiency are calculated and compared. The results show that when the
number of impeller is multiplied and the spacing between discs is reduced, the volumetric
flow rate and efficiency are increases.
