Abstract

Improvements in vehicle performance have created additional need for more sophisticated gear oil. Different automotive gear system contains many different components, each having its own requirements for lubrication such as viscosity,
power transmission, anti wear, etc. Potential mechanical engineer must be well equipped with the knowledge regarding oil characteristics and performance of an engine system. Unable to exactly identify the tribological problems in the engine and gearbox could seriously affect the performance of the vehicle. The objective of the project is to identify the effect of viscosity of automotive gear oils on friction and wear scar produced.
