Abstract

Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) is a technology than can reduce the compaction and mixing temperature of asphalt binder by reducing the binder’s viscosity. This paper gives a detailed review regarding WMA from past researchers and practical experience from author in terms of compaction properties such as compaction and mixing temperature, air void, Marshall Stability and Flow, bulk density, specific gravity and many others. Moreover, this paper also states the different types of WMA additives, with its setbacks and benefits when using them which is essential for better understanding during application of WMA in pavement constructions. Marshall Mix Method and Testing was performed to analyze the difference in the compaction properties between conventional Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) and Warm Mix asphalt.

In this research, binder asphalt concrete mix of AC10 was used as design parameters. For zeolite content, 3%, 5% and 7% by weight of binder was used as design parameters to analyze the properties of WMA. As for HMA, the temperatures of 130°C and 160°C was used as compaction temperature to assess the behavior of HMA at lower temperatures. Thus, a total of 5 design parameters which is HMA @ 160°C, HMA @ 130°C, WMA 3% Zeolite @ 130°C, WMA Zeolite content, 5% Zeolite content @ 130°C and WMA 7% Zeolite content @ 130°C will be subjected to Marshall testing. Each parameters will undergo 75 blows of Marshall Compactor. The outcome of the results are discussed on later part of study.
