Abstract

Nowadays, pipeline corrosion is a major challenge faced by many oil and gas industries that cost billions of dollars loss associated to the corrosion pipeline failures. The presence of internal pressure and longitudinal compressive stress inside the pipeline while transporting the fluid is one of the contributing factor that leads to premature pipeline failure. The focus of this work is to determine the failure pressure of the corroded pipeline with circumferential corrosion groove defect subjected to internal pressure and longitudinal compressive stress. The defect reduces the thickness of the wall that reduces the resistance towards the internal pressure in the pipeline. The failure pressures of the defected pipelines are obtained by considering multiple variations of compressive stress, internal pressure, defect depth and length values in order to get the failure pressures of the defected pipelines. The main software used in this work is ANSYS software to simulate the defect for the all the variables that were mentioned earlier. Plastic deformation takes place at the defected region of the pipe when subjected to internal pressure and longitudinal compressive stress. The failure initiated at the middle of the defected region. The presence of internal pressure and compressive stress in the defected pipeline plays a critical role in the failure pressure prediction. Regardless of the amount of the pressure and stress presence, it will reduce the failure pressure of the pipelines.
