Abstract

The refining processes of crude oil generate a large amount of petroleum sludge (PS)
in petroleum industries. Based on the chemical composition and previous studies on
PS, the mixing of PS in bitumen can reduce the waste in petroleum industries and ensure
the sustainable modification of bitumen. However, there is a need for in-depth binder
characterizations to examine the suitability of PS as a bitumen modifier. This study
investigated the optimum mixing conditions for the preparation of PS modified
bitumen (PSMB) and the effects of PS on the physical, chemical, rheological and
morphological characteristics of PSMB.
