Abstract

An 'improved' scale inhibitor to inhibit calcium carbonate formation has been
developed. The chemistry of scale inhibitors with the incorporation of synergistic
material, a mutual solvent to improve retention in the formation during squeeze
treatment is studied.
Inadequate knowledge of scale inhibitor chemistry and its interactions with the
formation can yield ineffective squeezes. Inappropriately designed squeezes may
actually damage the formation. Thus, for inhibitors which are intended for downhole
application, it is not sufficient that a particular species inhibits scale; it must also have
the appropriate interaction with the formation to give a longer squeeze life time. The
inhibitor is also should be compatible with field brines and relatively stable to thermal
degradation at reservoir conditions.
