Abstract

Inevitable decreasing trend in the world supply of fossil fuels has sparked interest in
new sustainable and renewable energy. Since then, hydrogen has been considered as
the most potential replacement for fossil fuels. In this regard, lots of researches and
studies have been carried out in order to find the most suitable storage adsorbent or
system for hydrogen. In this hydrogen adsorption study, carbon materials such as
Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs), Carbon Nanofibers (CNFs) and Activated Carbon (AC)
are used. The carbon materials are modified with nitric acid to modify their surface
properties, like texture and surface chemistry. Then, the raw and functionalized
carbon materials are characterized in order to determine the functional group by
using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Next, Hydrogen adsorption
capacity test is carried out using fixed bed reactor. The amount of hydrogen
adsorption is then compared between different types of carbon materials before and
after functionalization. The effect of functionalization on the hydrogen adsorption
will be evaluated as well.
