Abstract

A CO2 absorption system with amine based solvents is the most common technology for CO2 removal today. CO2 must be removed from the flue gas purposely to manage future climate changes since carbon dioxide is a major greenhouse gas. In this project, the amines have been studied to see their degradation by biological and thermal. Amines also have been studied to see the effect of their different type and concentration on the corrosion rate of the metal. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of amines degradation via biological analysis and thermal gravimetric analysis of raw amines as well as the corrosion analysis of amines during CO2 absorption. The three analysis were conducted on two type of amines which are PZ (Piperazine) and AHPD (2-Amino-2-hydroxymethyl-1,3-propanediol) and both amines were prepared according to the standard range of concentration used in CO2 absorption system. The obtained results showed COD of PZ range from 1250 mg/L to 1450 mg/L and the COD of AHPD range from 1200 mg/L to 1700 mg/L. The corrosion analysis used two techniques, TAFEL and linear polarization curve. The lowest corrosion rate calculated based on metal deposition of A-36 mild steel in the 10.35 wt% PZ is 1.7912 mmPY while the lowest corrosion rate in various concentration of AHPD is from 25 wt% AHPD which its corrosion rate is 0.4604672 mmPY.
