Abstract

This project aims to perform assessment of corneal ulcer progression using digital
image processing. Corneal ulcer isa type of eye disease that presently approaches 1.5
to 2 millions patients per year at developing world, estimated by World Health
Organization. Current methods are mainly clinical assessment and bacteriological
identification. Several problems are identified, which are parameters measured are
inaccurate, difficulties in handling patients and only same ophthalmologist has to
examine the progression of a patient. The study focuses onenhances and analyze eye
images. Several steps of image enhancement have been performed by MATLAB to
increase quality of the images. The methods used are grayscale conversion, intensity
vale adjustment, image subtraction and thresholding. Analysis of corneal ulcer
progression is established by using parameters measured; area, height and width.
Finally, graphical user interface (GUI) is developed. Its aim is to ease
ophthalmologist in monitoring corneal ulcer progression.
