Abstract

The Final Year Project course is designed for student to do research; design
and development work in each discipline, to produce practical solution. It provides
opportunity for student to use the tools and techniques of problem-solving by
engagement of the project. The objective of this project is to study the importance
protection in Power Systems and also understand Wide-Area Protection.
Transmission line faults in power systems are of major concern to electrical engineers
working in power transmission and distribution. Despite the effort to prevent these
faults within the system, they occur frequently and without any warning. Beside this,
this project is used PSCAD (Power System Computer Aided Design) software as the
tool to control the integrated operation of the protective system. This study will be
able to give better understanding of the importance and need for the wide-area
protection in the industry. PSCAD is used to simulate the transmission line that had
been designed. On the other hand, different type of fault can be applied in the
transmission line. From the simulation, it shows the duration period and also the
starting period when the fault is occurred. In the discussion section, all finding would
be discussed in more detail.
