Abstract

Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS Gas District Cooling is currently has a sensible heat Thermal Energy Storage system. It will be very good if latent heat thermal energy storage can be added to the system to improve the Gas District Cooling performance. The main problem which occurred prior deciding to have this project is because of having a big size of tank and high cost of thermal energy storage system when use water. The expectations after go through all works which related to this project is obtained with a design including technical drawing such as thickness of the wall, temperature outside the thermal energy storage, the suitable budget cost, use non corrosive material, calculation, choosing suitable phase change material and dimensions. In this project, the water contains in Thermal Energy Storage is changed to ice storage. It is because of water (in liquid form) is very easy to change to ice which is in solid form without using another expensive phase change material. By using ice in replacing water in Thermal Energy Storage, the objectives to reduce cost and size of the tank of this project are achieved. The volume of the new ice storage tank is 750 m3 which is 1/7 of the current thermal energy storage. The diameter of new ice storage tank also reduced to 9.85 m while the old one is 22.3 m. The height of new ice storage tank becomes 9.85 m while the current one is 14 m. The capacity of a nodule to produce energy is 0.0153 kW. Number of nodules contain in the tank is 2 300 654. Two electric chillers are used in one time operation. Capacity of heat exchangers is 21600 kW. Pump work is 5 kW.
