Abstract
The exhaust gasses which enter the turbocharger are at high temperature. This heat energy is transferred from the turbine side of the turbocharger to the compressor side of turbocharger. At high temperatures this heat can deteriorate the lubricating oil flowing through the turbocharger .Furthermore, the heat flux absorbed by the compressor causes an increase in the air temperature at the compressor, which reduces the oxygen density in the air. Air with low oxygen density increases the amount of flue gasses produced when supplied to the air intake in the engine .In this research the effects of heat flux through conduction are studied by doing computational fluid dynamic simulation in conjunction with steady state thermal simulation. Garret GT2860R by Honeywell is chosen as the turbocharger for study in this research. In addition, the computational simulation is first validated using experimental results. The validated model is then used as the bases of new design developments to reduce the heat flux from turbine side of the turbocharger to the compressor side of the turbocharger. The new cooling system provides promising cooling effect to the bearing housing reducing the overall temperature by 30 degrees.
