Abstract

The solar chimney technology and its working principle were discovered in the early years mainly for ventilation. Due to the updraft wind, man considered it as a power plant as well; a site where electricity is generated when the wind turbine is rotated by the moving updraft air in the chimney. In large power plants, flue gases are produced from blast furnaces and escapes into the atmosphere at relatively high temperature. These flue gases have high thermal energy in which their energy can be recovered and used to generate electricity. The main purpose of this project is to conduct an investigation on energy recovery of flue gasses that are discharged into the environment via a modified solar chimney. The solar chimney will primarily be dependent on thermal energy converted from the solar energy and heat exchanged from power plants’ flue gases. This report consists of 8 chapters; introduction, literature review, methodology, concept of modification, experimental data, data analysis, recommendation and conclusion. More research is done based on the improvements or modifications that need to be implemented to the existing solar chimney; finned absorber plate, wind rotors, generator housing, and the modified circular chimney. The introduction section basically offers basic understanding on the project and its progress. Papers, websites and books are then quoted in the literature review section to guarantee the integrity of information regarding the project. In the methodology section, forecasting, planning and milestones are set; the analysis approach, flow chart, and Gantt chart. The concept of modification basically highlights the modification done to the model; experiment data highlights the experiment procedures and instrumentations, and a thorough analysis of tabulated data in the data analysis section.
