Abstract

System safety is one of the important factors that need to be considered in
designing a building. According to NIOSH, electrocution is the third leading cause of
work related death and many had suffered due to electrical bums. Improper safety
design could causes fire and damaged of property and possibly loss of death. Due to
that problem, it is essential to conduct a study on the safety that will focus on earthing
system on Universiti Teknologi Petronas new academic building. Apart from that, the
study will include the effect of the cable sizing in determining power losses and
voltage drop. From this project, the author has a general knowledge on reading single
line diagram. Most of the earthing system is in good condition and only few of them
have to do some improvement. There are a few methods that can be applied for
improvement such as replacing new earth electrode, adding electrode, and changing
the soil resistivity. For the effect of cable sizing in determine power losses and
voltage drop, the relationship between cable impedance and power losses could be
observed. During this project, data collection is the most important part. Example of
the data is like cable sizing, impedance measurement and single line diagram. After
getting the data, the study could be conducted on earthing system. For the relation
between cable sizing and power loss, it is done by simulate on the SKM power tools
software. By the end of this project, the author could have knowledge on how the
implementation of safety in the building apart from observing the effect of cable
sizing in power flow and voltage drops.
