Abstract

Due to the increase standard of living, home automation is introduced in the 20th century. It applies the information and technology for the security, entertainment, comfort and communications needs of the home residents. Home automation refers to the introduction of centralized or automatic control electrical and electronic systems on devices in a house such as lighting control, alarm system, door lock system and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC). With home automation, residents can easily monitor and control devices with the information provided.
This project demonstrates a wireless home automation lighting system that allows the user to control the light bulbs in the house using Android application via the design of TCP/IP. Due to the limitation, prototype is built by using home PC as a home server, which will set an access point in a network instead of setting up in a web server. An Android application will be developed which sends HTTP requests to the server via TCP/IP and the requests will be received by the embedded microcontroller.
The implementation of this project is achieved by using combination of software, firmware and hardware development. An Android application is developed using the Android SDK software in Eclipse platform. PHP scripting is used to set up the home server. Arduino with the Wifi shield, which is the firmware of the device, is used to get the data and do interfacing with the hardware circuit.
In this report, the results of the home automation lighting system using Android application are shown sequentially, demonstrating the system is able to execute accurately and efficiently based on the real-time information. In nutshell, this project is feasible and suitable to further develop with the increasing needs on home automation system.
