Abstract

The project, Development of a Controller for a Partial Stroke Valve Testing is
a collaboration between Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) and PETRONAS
Group Technology Solutions (PGTS). This report presents the progress and the future
development of the work. The objective is to develop a controller to execute various test
sequences for a Partial Stroke Valve Testing and Full Stroke Valve Testing in repetitive
modes, as required in the testing requirements. Specifically, the PLC is to provide the
signal for a Full Stroke Testing (FST) execution, while the vendor's software is
programmed to perform Partial Stroke Testing (PST). More specifically the important
element of the test is to seek verification that the FST would override the PST if both are
executed at the same time, as well as to study the effect of valve design to the overall
performance of the PST. Technically, the tests are scrutinizing the preventives, corrective
and diagnostic aspects of the valves, as claimed by the vendors. This project is part of the
Improvement Working Group (IWG) of Skill Group 14 (SKG14). Lead engineers of
Functional Safety Process Automation and Optimisation from Research and Technology
Division of PGTS conducted regular visits to witness the development of the project. The
outcome of this project in the form of the performance results analysis and report would
be used in implementation of PETRONAS plants.
