Abstract

The project focuses on the development of an electronic fuel injection system for
a single cylinder small engine. The engine currently used a carburettor fuelling system
which is less efficient in fuelling control thus resulting in high fuel consumption, lower
engine performances that contribute to poor emission released to the environment. The
main idea of the project is to develop an electronic fuel injection control system on the
current single cylinder engine to improve the engine operating region of efficiency and
hence produces a better engine performance. In addition, the electronic fuel injection
system should be capable of producing a better fuel controls thus resulting improved
emission. The project implementation includes the design, simulation and construction of
prototype electronic fuel injection system. The project includes quite a substantial
literature studies, software modelling and simulations, and hardware on-board of actual
prototyping. The project deliverable in the form of hardware prototyping consisting of an
engine control unit, sensors and actuators and actual data collected from the electronic
fuel injection systems. This study shows that it is viable to use simulations and modelling
approach in designing and analyzing an electronic fuel injection system. Experiment
conducted using potentiometer as sensors input and to represent engine load and utilizing
the results from the modelling and simulations. It is indicate a potential in achieving good
performance in term of fuel delivery compared to carburettor fuelling system.
