Abstract
Malaysia has a large number of small villages and islands, mainly in Sabah and Sarawak that lack in electricity, and probability in connecting them with high voltage gridlines in the near future is very poor due to geographical issues and many other constraints. In this report, a study has been presented for a sustainable development of solar energy to fulfill the energy demands of a remote village. In the ninth Malaysia plan, the energy sector continues to focus on development on the rural electrification program. The implementation will be intensified to improve the quality of life of rural communities. The seven strategies of the energy sector in ninth Malaysia plan includes ‘promoting greater use of renewable energy for power generation by industries’ and ‘expanding rural electricity coverage, particularly in Sabah and Sarawak’ [1]. These 2 strategies are in line with the national mission which is to improve the standard and sustainability quality of life. In this report, evaluation criteria of PV rural electrification will be discussed. The daily electrical energy needed in each house, 10 and 20 houses are calculated. After that, the PV system capacity is estimated and recommended.
