Abstract

Peak overvoltage occurring during switching (energizing and de-energizing) is one of the most frequently encountered problems in power systems environment. Magnitude and shape of overvoltage vary with network configuration and the pointon-wave where the switching takes place. Detailed electromagnetic transients analysis is not common in day-to-day operations of power systems and is extensively carried out during planning stage of the system. Hence, it is important for operators to ensure peak overvoltage resulting from switching are well within safe limits [1].
