Abstract

Malaysia has been considered one of the fastest developing country in the entire ASEAN region,
with many parts of the country being urbanised and industrialized. Same can be said for wastewater
treatment facility in Malaysia that has also seen much improvements since the 1950s as the method
of treatment and technologies used now are more advanced and produces a cleaner, more purified
effluent. However, with that being said, presently many of the rural areas in Malaysia lack
complete sewage treatment facilities as many of them are still using outdated treatment methods
such as the septic tank or directly discharging their wastewater into the environment Thus, a
plausible solution would be applying the integrated pilot plant in rural communities for a more
complete sewage treatment facility that is expected to produce effluents that will adhere to the
discharge limits of Standard B in Malaysia. The pilot plant integrates an anoxic tank where the
anoxic condition is achieved by suspending and mixing the wastewater with sludge via the
pumping action of influent wastewater to the bottom of the anoxic tank. Also, aerobic treatment
where organic biodegradation happens in the aeration tank with the help of two rings of fine bubble
diffusers powered by the air compressor.
