Abstract

The aim of this project is to determine and study the free vibration of a new type of composite
beam that is light and high constructability. It is made up by the cold-formed steel which can form
into different shape imbedded in concrete and it is named as ‘Precast Cold-Formed Composite
Beam’ (PCFC Beam). The motivation of the project comes from the composite beam section that
have been developed by Dr. Airil Yasreen on 2007. The most important elastic property of the
composite cross section which is the second moment of inertia required transformation of the cross
section into a single unit as to allow both elements, concrete and steel. Series of calculation
procedure development to obtain the second moment of inertia has been demonstrated. With the
present of all the parameters, the free vibration of PCFC Beam is then being studied by determine
its natural frequency by using a numerical solution called finite element method.
