Abstract
Oedometer test and some basic geotechnical test were conducted to understand the compression behaviour of black shale and weathered chert in Pokok Sena, Kedah. The research had been inspired by series of geologist studies on Semanggol Formation which were found expose at North Perak, South Kedah and North Kedah. The study of Semanggol Formation is still lack of information thus it push engineer to study into a new field of study, geotechnical, to understand the relation between geological properties and geotechnical properties of Semanggol Formation. 5 black shale and 5 weathered chert samples were taken from the studied area and undergo into some laboratory tests. The tests were conducted to determine the moisture content, specific gravity, Atterberg limit, particle size distribution, highest dry density and compression behaviour under 1 dimensional vertical stress.
