Abstract

PVC braided hose are widely used in a variety of industrial applications, from the food and beverage industry to the construction and mining industries. The smooth, abrasion-resistant PVC tubing doesn't impart taste or odor to the material which it transports. However, leaky PVC hoses are a common issue in industrial applications. Therefore, there is a crucial need to develop more accurate ways of finding leaks to enable industries to save revenue and reduce their environmental impact. In this study, industrial PVC braided hoses with different thicknesses had undergone hydrostatic burst tests at four different orientations which are Horizontal position, L-shape, U-shape, and S-shape in order to investigate the possible reasons of failure. Upon the simulation done using ANSYS software, an experimental study is required to investigate the stress distribution, elongation and to determine the weakest point of braided hose at different orientations. The experiment was conducted in accordance with ASTM D-380. Pressure was applied gradually to the hose until it reaches burst point and length was measured after each minute of applied pressure in order to find the elongation. Based on the results, for both of the thicknesses, the highest burst pressure is for the horizontal hose position followed by the L shape, U shape and S shape. The weakest point for horizontal hose position is near the fitting while for the three other orientations are at the bending curve. The total elongation results show that the horizontal position elongated the most compared to other orientations. The elongation results show that it has only slight variation which shows that total elongation has minimal effect on the braided hose failure. The best shape of for installation is horizontal hose position to withstand high pressure. The results obtained from the experiment will be compared with the one of the simulation as to conclude the study.
