Abstract

In case of fire in atrium shopping mall, the smoke plume flows from the fire
compartment opening and rise vertically towards the atrium ceiling. It has been found
that as the plume rises vertically, it may curl inward the atrium upper balconies
resulting in smoke contamination. Past research found that smoke curling depends
upon different parameters which include fire compartment opening width, balcony
breadth and depth of plume at spill edge, where 1/10* scale experimental study was
performed to investigate the above mentioned parameters without including the effect
of down stand. However, research on rising smokeplumes found that the presence of
down stand structure at the fire compartment opening would cause the plume to rise
closely to the upper balconies, which may cause anincrease in smoke contamination.
Down stand is commonly used in shops to display the shop trade name. However, past
research did not include the effect of down stand on smoke contarnination in atrium
upper balconies.
