Abstract

Greater and greater parking spaces and facilities are required with the increasing
production of vehicles and the world's population. Parking problems are significant
problems, particularly in common and well-travelled places or areas of attraction in
most urban cities. Shopping malls are the most crowded places and they usually built
with large parking lot for vehicle parking. Finding a vacant parking slot is very difficult
especially during the peak hours such as lunch time and happy hour time. This situation
become more serious during sales carnivals, holiday seasons and any other festivals
such as New Year, Christmas, etc. This study aims to improve parking facilities by
introducing a new Smart Parking System that would reduce the time consume for
looking and getting a vacant parking space. The driver would be able to check the
availability of each parking space and select a preferred empty parking slot upon
arrival at the parking lot. QR code technology is utilized for selected parking lot
navigation and parking ticket payment. A QR code with embedded Nav-Pay
(Navigation and Payment) system is printed on the parking ticket. The driver would
be able to get the route to the selected parking slot and pay parking fees by scanning
the QR code with smartphone. The proposed Smart Parking System is developed as a
web-based system and connected to the Cloud server via Internet connection.
Additionally, a Smart Parking Management System is developed with a data
visualization dashboard to monitor the parking lot operation.
