Abstract

The Malaysian housing sector plays a vital role in economic and social prosperity
along with meeting the basic accommodation provision of the country. Besides being
an important pillar of national growth, this sector contributes a significant negative
impact on the environment. A handsome consumption of natural assets in terms of
construction materials along with huge energy requirements during the different
phases of its life cycle ultimately result in generation of different environmental
burdens among which carbon footprint is the most abundant and damaging. The
current anthropogenic trend of population growth, rapid urbanization, industrialization
and economic development prosperity would exert a serious pressure on the basic
housing infrastructure to meet the demands of future.
