Abstract
Activated carbon is acknowledged as an efficient adsorbent to be used in both
gas and liquid phase applications. In this study, a variety of carbonaceous-containing
agricultural wastes are exploited as precursors for the activated carbon production.
The renewability properties and wide availability of these resources in Malaysia
makes the agricultural wastes as the most promising materials to be utilized. The
objectives ofthis research study are to evaluate the physicochemical properties ofthe
synthesized activated carbons and their ability to capture carbon dioxide (CO2). The
production of activated carbon under one-step CO2 activation process and absence of
any chemicals is advantageous as it consumes less energy and operating time, in
addition to high carbon yield i.e. 26-41 wt%.
