Malaysia's energy industry is a significant source of economic growth. The government has prioritized increasing hydrocarbon production as a driver of economic growth through upstream investment and exploration but pursuing this strategy has become increasingly difficult as production has declined due to maturing fields and a lack of developed new fields. Recent reports on hydrocarbon production indicate that field output is rapidly declining, particularly in Deepwater Sabah.
