Abstract
This project investigates the creation of an augmented reality (AR) application with the purpose of improving accessibility for visually challenged users. The program converts text into spoken words instantly. The main objective is to enhance the autonomy of individuals with visual impairments by equipping them with a device that facilitates self-reliant navigation and engagement with their environment. The application enables visually impaired individuals to access written information by converting it into audible format. This allows them to "read" text from different surfaces and objects in their surroundings. The process used consists of iterative development cycles, with an initial emphasis on producing a proof-of-concept using Python. The project expanded to incorporate a more sophisticated prototype created in Java specifically for Android platforms, acknowledging the extensive utilization of mobile devices and the potential for augmented reality (AR) applications in this domain. Future endeavors aim to enhance the application's capabilities to wearable augmented reality (AR) devices, providing a smoother and more unified user experience. Further enhancements planned for integration encompass obstacle recognition and navigating help, hence augmenting the usability of the application for VIPs. There is also a strong focus on optimizing the application's response time to ensure a seamless and efficient user experience. This initiative has the potential to greatly enhance the quality of life for those with visual impairments, providing a higher degree of independence and accessibility that was not possible with conventional assistive technologies.
