Abstract
This report mainly summarizes the rock properties of Miocene carbonate from Miri, Sarawak. This project aims to study the behavior of acoustic velocity of Miocene carbonates with relation to the porosity and permeability. This report also tells the literature review of the rock properties such as the rock density, the mineral content, acoustic velocity, porosity and permeability. The Miri geological background which is the rock sample is also written in this report. Then, the research methodologies of this project are shown in this report. Some of the equipments used for this project are the cutting machine, coring machine, porosimeter and SonicViewer-SX. The results are presented and discussed in the results and discussion part of this report. The acoustic velocities are highly affected by heterogeneity. The study confirms an inverse relation between porosity and acoustic velocities, where pore size and pore type can be the main factor controlling the acoustic response at a given porosity. The result also shown that there is an inverse relation between permeability and acoustic velocities. This study can improve the understanding of how acoustic velocities relate to their rock properties.
