Abstract
Modern day endoscopy uses a tube connected to a camera at one end and the video output is
connected to a monitor. A new method to perform endoscopy arises providing a wireless data
transmission from the camera to the monitor or storage. This wireless endoscope is capsule-like
shape. A patient needs to swallow the capsule and the captured images will then transferred
from the capsule to an external recording device by a wireless transmitter. The wireless
endoscope is powered by a battery. Because of that, has limited battery power for image
transmission. A stream of images or a video generates a large amount of data that will consume
a lot of power to process and transmit. A suggested method is to compress the video using a
compression technique developed specifically for wireless capsule images before being
transmitted. The proposed video compression can compress up to 50 times of an uncompressed
video file thus using less power to transmit the data. The implementation of video compression
can be done on an FPGA board. This implementation can then be applied to a real wireless
endoscopy device.
