Abstract

Hydrotalcite-like compounds are not common things in today’s world. Their
potential in application as catalyst, adsorbents, anion exchangers and also nucleophilic
halide exchanger had been discovered few years back. In this study, hydrotalcite-like
compound will be synthesized and characterized for their potential as hydrogen storage
purpose. Based on previous research, hydrotalcite-like compound has high potential to
overcome hurdles of several other existing hydrogen storage materials.
The synthesis process of hydrotalcite-like compound will be using Magnesiumbased
materials. Sol-gel related coprecipitation (SGRCP) technique implemented in this
study with sodium carbonate as the precipitating agent. SGRCP is a new developed
method by the combination of inorganic precursor with organic solvent. There are a few
methods of analysis in order to discover the characterization of the hydrotalcite-like
compounds, which are Powder X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared
Spectroscopy (FTIR), surface area analyzer (BET) and Field Emission Scanning
Electron Microscope (FESEM) analysis.
This study will be focusing on the effect of thermal treatment using different
calcinations process of mixed oxides compound and also different hydrotalcite-like
compound ratio. Compilation from this study will be able to determine the optimum
condition for hydrotalcite compound as the new promising hydrogen storage material.
