Abstract
Road accidents have now become a major concern in Malaysia because of the high
fatalities recorded. It is well established that considerable safety benefits may result
from the application of appropriate road engineering or traffic management measures at
hazardous road locations. In order to reduce accidents effectively and help to achieve
the national accident reduction targets, it is essential that a systematic approach to the
identification of hazards and selection of appropriate treatments can be carried out at
local level throughout the country. This project is basically a study to identify
engineering factors that contribute to the transportation crashes for a Federal Trunk
Road (FT005) in Perak state. This research includes collection of traffic accident report
form (POL 27) for the accidents occurred along FT005 from year 2003 to 2005, and
road detailing from local authority. Site Investigation on the hazardous location has
been carried out to identify and analyze the factors contributing to the accidents and
further the proposed potential solutions to improve the highway safety for the selected
sites. Eventually this project is expected to serve as the ground towards understanding
the engineering factors that contribute to the transportation crashes.
