Abstract

The principalaim of this projectwas to investigate the effects of the addition of
used engine oil on the propertiesof fresh and hardened concrete. The significance of
the experimental program was to confirm the hypothesis that the addition of used
engine oil in the fresh concrete mix could be similar to adding an air-entraining
chemical admixture, thus enhancing some of the durability properties of concrete
while serving as a technique of disposing the oil waste. In this research, a
comparative study of the properties of concrete with used engine oil, new engine oil,
Sika Aer air entraining agent and control mix was made in order to determine the
most significant effect(s) of used engine oil.
Based on the detailed literature review, some of the fundamental engineering
properties, such as air content, total porosity and compressive strength were
investigated for various concrete mixes.
The compressive strength of control mix at all the ages, 3, 7, 28 and 90 days
was obtained higher than the compressive strength of concrete mixes with the
addition of used and new engine oil and Sika Aer air entraining agent.
Similarly the total porosity of control mixes was also obtained more than the
total porosity of other mixes at all ages. Therefore, addition of used engine oil may
enhance the durability of the concrete due to low porosity.
