Abstract
Since the introduction of Polycrystalline Diamond Compact (PDC) drill bit into the well drilling industry in 1976, the popularity of the PDC drill bit has grown steadily over the years and so are the efforts and research made to elevate its performance and drilling efficiency. This project will test one of the variables related to the PDC cutter which is the PDC cutter shape design through numerical and simulation analysis with the aim to evaluate and study the effect of shape design of the PDC cutter in relation to the drilling rate of penetration (ROP). Four different PDC cutter shape has been selected for simulation analysis which are conventional flat PDC cutter, chamfered, dual chamfered and conical PDC cutter. In this paper, numerical modelling in ANSYS AUTODYN of the rock-cutter interaction is performed and the results obtained will be used to determine the optimum value of the identified parameters.
