Abstract

This report presents the research that had been conducted during current semester and progress on the project so far based on this chosen topic, which is Study The Effects of Sintering Atmospheres on Corrosion Behavior of Powder Injection Molding 316L Stainless Steel.
Stainless steel 316L is used as biomaterial for implants regardless of emerging new materials for this application. However, there is still some uncertainty in corrosion behavior of 316L stainless steel in biomedical application. In the present study, effects of sintering atmosphere on corrosion behavior of 316L stainless steel samples manufactured by powder injection molding (PIM) process were investigated.
In order to study the effects of sintering atmosphere, sintering was carried out under various sintering atmosphere, i.e. hydrogen, nitrogen and vacuum. Sintering is the process of thermal treatment of a powder or compact at a temperature below the melting point of the main constituent, for the purpose of increasing its strength by bonding together of the particles. The corrosion behaviors of sintered samples were studied by weight loss method in Ringer’s solution of pH 7.4 for 60 days. After the weight loss measurement, surface of the samples was analyzed by using FESEM.
