Abstract
The study of microstructure and chemical properties of Barnacles grow at external
surface of pipelines is a case study about the Barnacle that grows on the external
pipeline that has brought to UTP by PETRONAS subsidiaries. The study will focus
on the microstructure of the Barnacles hard shell and chemical compounds that could
be found in the hard shell. The samples are characterized using characterization tools
such as SEM, XRD, and FTIR. The observation from the SEM is the Barnacles hard
shells contain a lot of pores, the XRD results show that the main component of the
sample is Calcium Carbonate (CaC03), the FTIR show that the sample contains an
organic compound such as Alcohol, Benzene, Vinyl and Primary Amine. It is
recommended to further research to find the relationship between the chemical
component and the coating of the pipeline where the Barnacles grown.
